Our story

Born behind the walls of Cartagena

Matiz began in Cartagena de Indias, inside colonial and republican mansions of the Old City and Getsemaní. Buildings that have witnessed centuries of life were restored stone by stone — keeping their soul while opening their doors to a new kind of guest.

The sophisticated traveler doesn’t collect rooms; they collect stories. They want to wake up somewhere that could only exist in that place — with its own art, its own light, its own history. That is what we build: a collection of hotels where nothing repeats.

The word

ma·tiz

/ma·ˈtis/

1. Each of the gradations a color can take while remaining itself.

Cada una de las gradaciones que puede tener un color sin dejar de ser el mismo.

2. The subtle nuance that gives something its character.

El rasgo sutil que le da carácter a algo.

The big idea

Every hotel has its own matiz

We believe a hotel should be discovered, not just booked. That history is something to live in, not look at. That art belongs on the walls you sleep beside. That the best places are passed on quietly, between friends. One collection. Many shades. No two alike.

Personality

Five traits, one character

Artistic

Art is not decoration; it is the reason for the hotel.

Historic

We restore, never replace. Every wall keeps its memory.

Charming

Warmth before formality. Guests are welcomed like friends.

Sophisticated

Refinement that never needs to raise its voice.

Curated

Every object, every song, every recommendation is chosen.

Why a dot

Our mark ends in a painted dot — the matiz. It changes color with every hotel: bougainvillea for the Historic Center, ochre for Getsemaní, green for Pedregal. Like the last touch an artist adds before signing the canvas.
